Child Custody & Support

practice areas child custody 300x300Family law matters include more than divorce or separation. Even parents who were never married need to make child custody and support arrangements, and it’s often a stressful process.

There are different types of custodial arrangements that define who can make decisions for your children and the obligations you have to care for them.

Legal custody includes the right to make decisions about your child's upbringing. In a joint custody arrangement, the parents share the decision-making ability. In a sole custody arrangement, which is rare, only one parent makes decisions for your child.

Physical custody is the right to have a child live with a parent some or all of the time. The primary custodian (custodial parent) lives with the child more than 50% of the time, and the other parent (non-custodial parent) has visitation with the child.

However, custody arrangements are not as simple as these terms. We can help you and your co-parent come up with an arrangement that works best for you and your children. We start with negotiation to promote peace between parents, which ultimately benefits the children. If that fails, we move to enforcing your rights in court.

The amount of child support is determined by following state guidelines and the process is complex. Applying guidelines incorrectly may mean paying too much child support or not receiving enough support. Although there is always an obligation for both parties to financially support their children, the Court cannot enforce that obligation until there is an order or written agreement signed by a Judge.

We can help you determine the correct amount of child support. If child support obligations are unmet, we can also help you enforce them through a court order.
